BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Authorities say a 19-year-old was arraigned on open murder charges on Thursday, June 1, and is the final suspect charged in the September 2022 shooting death of 2-year-old Kai Turner.
Battle Creek Police arrested Hashim Bell Jr. on Wednesday, June 1.
Officers from the Gang Suppression Unit and the newly-formed Community Oriented Policing Services Unit were in the area of North Washington Avenue and Ardmoor Drive Wednesday, investigating a shooting that happened over the weekend, when they were able to arrest Bell during a traffic stop.
On September 20, 2022, officers responded at about 2:20 a.m. to a report of shots fired in the 100 block of Cliff Street, and found that Kai was shot. He died at the hospital from his injuries.
Police determined that an SUV drove past the home, and someone fired multiple shots into the home. Kai was the only person injured, and police believe Kai’s family was not the intended target.
Two other suspects in this case are awaiting trial – 18-year-old Martavon Nelson of Battle Creek, and a 17-year-old of Battle Creek, not named due to their being a minor.
Police arrested all three in September, the week of the shooting, but they did not have enough information and evidence to charge Bell at that time.
