WASHINGTON D.C. (WKZO AM/FM) – The U.S. House has passed a bipartisan bill that would suspend the nation’s debt ceiling for two years. Lawmakers voted 314-117 on the measure Wednesday as the deadline to avoid a potential default is just days away. It still needs to pass in the Democratic-controlled Senate before heading to President Biden’s desk.
Republican 4th District Congress Bill Huizinga of Zeeland voted in favor of the bill, saying “For the first time in modern history, Washington will be spending less money next year than it is this year. By making the first cut to baseline discretionary spending in more than a decade and enacting budgetary caps, the Fiscal Responsibility Act will reduce spending and save taxpayers an estimated $2.1 trillion. This legislation also strengthens our workforce by expanding work requirements to help lift Americans out of poverty.”
“The Fiscal Responsibility Act will grow our economy by enacting the first meaningful permitting reform in roughly 40 years so we can unleash American energy production and improve infrastructure development.”
The deal negotiated between the White House and Republicans includes non-defense spending cuts and policy provisions.
