ALLEGAN, MI (WKZO-AM/FM, May 24, 2023) – As US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy issued a warning that social media use is a main contributor to depression, anxiety and other problems in the nation’s teenagers, some local teens are already aware about this and are looking to do something about it.
A long-time proponent of mental health awareness, Dr. Murthy’s advisory urges policymakers and the companies that use the social media platforms to share with parents the burden of managing children’s and adolescents’ social media use, as the rates of teenage depression, sadness and hopelessness have skyrocketed over the past decade, especially among girls.
On a local level, a group of teens is already looking at ways to address this issue, according to Amanda Chappell, the Development and Communications Coordinator with the Allegan County Community Foundation. She is not only an advisor to the foundation’s Teens Aiding Growth youth advisory council, or TAG Team, but is a past participant during her own high school days.
