KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Several local governmental bodies have declared June 2 to be Gun Violence Awareness Day in Kalamazoo. But despite their efforts, the shootings continue.
A possible suspect in the Sunday, May 14 shooting that left one dead and two wounded is being held pending investigation, after he was taken into custody on Mills Street. Police identified the victim as 33-year old Marcus Leonard Pierce.
The two others injured during the drive-by on Ada Street on Mother’s day suffered non-life threatening wounds.
Kalamazoo City Mayor Dave Anderson who was at the scene during the initial investigation, says it was discouraging and depressing to watch the crime scene being searched.
While he says there are no direct answers, Anderson thinks that maybe moms could be one of them.
There were two other shootings in Kalamazoo on Sunday, one of them resulting in a minor injury with the victim refusing to cooperate with investigators. The other resulted in arrests on gun and drug charges.
While Kalamazoo County works to curb gun violence, Counties in northern Michigan are approving resolutions urging state lawmakers not to do anything that restricts the rights of gun owners.
County Commissioners received two of them this week.
