VICKSBURG, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A multi-year plan to establish a 5-acre flower meadow network at the Mill in Vicksburg has begun.
Stretching 5 acres on the east side of the Mill property and neighboring homes along Highway Street, the meadow will consist of wildflowers and mass-color sunflowers.
Vicksburg city officials say it’s the first phase of the plan to create the network of colorful flowers along with walking trails and interpretive elements that will allow guests to enjoy while on the grounds. Landscape crews are working now to clear land and prepare the site for plantings.
While not open to the public this season, developers expect the fields to bloom by late summer and provide a colorful foreground view to the historic structure where a former rail line delivered raw materials to Lee Paper Company.
City officials are calling the initial phase of the development as something representing one of the many steps in the environmental remediation of a once-contaminated industrial zone, and the adaptive reuse of a 400,000 square foot factory into a thriving destination for entertainment and recreation.
It’s expected that the initial phase of the meadows will be in full bloom in about two to three years.
