VAN BUREN COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The suspect accused of killing an on-duty Van Buren County road worker in early March has been arrested.
The Van Buren County Prosecutor’s Office says the suspect believed to have killed county road worker 58-year-old Rene Rangel was arrested on Monday, May 8.
The suspect, who was not named by county officials, was charged with Operating while intoxicated causing death: a 15-year felony, Moving violation causing death in a work or school bus zone: a 15-year-felony, and Motor vehicle operation without security: a 1-year misdemeanor.
According to Michigan State Police, Rangel was killed on March 3rd at County Road 681 and 48th Avenue near Lawrence Township when the driver of a 1997 Dodge pickup truck rear ended a 2012 Chevrolet pickup truck while trying to pass, and hit Rangel while he was working.
State troopers believe drugs to be a factor in the crash.
The suspect is lodged at the Van Buren County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday afternoon, May 9.
