KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A controversial proposal to redesign the Road Commission of Kalamazoo County will be back before the County Board this Wednesday afternoon, and its fate could be decided.
Commissioner Jen Strebs feels that current appointed Road Commissioners are unresponsive to the public and should either be elected, or the department folded back into the County Government. And she would like to see a study done to see if it will save money.
But there has been strong opposition from other Commissioners, who essentially say if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
Township Supervisors have also taken a strong stand against making any changes, because it is their roads the Road Commission looks after, as the Cities of Kalamazoo and Portage maintain their own roads.
A vote on a proposal to hire a consultant to analyze their options could come up for a vote this afternoon.
reporting from John McNeill
The road commissionof kalamazoo is easly influenced by Joann and a couple of others. I would like to see a commission that is willing to take contol and listen to the people. Every commission meeting I went to didn’t care about what the people had to say, they just listened either Joann or Travis. I’m really hoping that the county commissioners take the road commission over. Matter of fact, I would like to see the MDOT fullfill the postion.
