MARSHALL, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – After hours of comment and debate, the Marshalls City Council has approved the rezoning to pave the way for the construction of Ford Motor Company’s planned vehicle battery plant in Calhoun County.
Last week a Joint Planning Commission made of representatives from Marshall Township and the City of Marshall voted against rezoning the land for industrial use. The farmland is located near I-94 and I-69.
After hearing from both those in favor and against the project, the City Commission voted unanimously in favor of the rezoning early Tuesday morning.
Nearly $2 billion in various tax breaks and incentives have already been approved. State funding includes a tax break expected to be worth $775 million over 15 years.
It also approved a $210 million “performance-based” grant for Ford, $330 million for road and infrastructure projects around the factory, and $300 million to develop other economic industries around Marshall.
