KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Public opposition has prompted the City of Kalamazoo to drop plans to rezone land at Stadium Drive and Drake Road for commercial development.
The rezoning was a small part of a much larger proposal to revise commercial zoning city wide that surfaced earlier this month.
Four years ago, hundreds turned out to protest and thousands signed petitions to prevent a mega car wash from being built on that site. It prompted city planners to create a Natural Features Protection ordinance to limit development near all such environmentally sensitive properties.
Some of those same protestors came forward earlier this month to remind City Planning Commissioners of how the public feels about that property.
They have kept up the pressure, and now City Planning Director Christina Anderson has issued a press release stating they are removing the parcels at 4301 and 4701 Stadium Drive from the zoning revisions.
They are just two of the 2,000 parcels that could be revised as part of the larger plan.
The City will hold a public meeting this evening on the other proposed changes. It will be held at the Kalamazoo College Athletic Complex at 7:00 p.m.
