LANSING, MI — A west Michigan lawmaker is brainstorming a new flag design for the state. State Representative Phil Skaggs says Michigan needs a new state flag with a “sense of pride and unity.”
The East Grand Rapids Democrat says he will introduce a bill this week in Lansing after similar legislation did not get enough support in 2016 and 2021. Skaggs said he hopes his proposal will gain bipartisan support.
The current Michigan state flag was designed in 1911 and includes the state seal of an elk, moose, and eagle along with Latin phrases. Previous efforts to change the state flag’s design included images of the Mackinac Bridge.
