KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A man charged with paralyzing a Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officer in a crash has pleaded guilty.
32-year-old Deymeon Marcel Todd entered a guilty plea in Kalamazoo County Circuit Court to operating while intoxicated causing serious injury.
Authorities say Todd hit KDPS Officer Tom Maher on the morning of July 9,2022.
Maher was riding his motorcycle to work on North Riverview Drive north of East G Avenue when he was struck by Todd around 6:30 a.m. The officer was paralyzed from the crash and had to have part of his leg amputated.
According to a probable cause affidavit filed in Kalamazoo County District Court, Todd said he had drank at least one beer and several shots of tequila and smoked a blunt of marijuana in the hours before he drove home, causing him to have a blood alcohol content of .085 according to a breathalyzer test at 6:44 a.m.
Todd is scheduled for sentencing on July 17th.
