LANSING, MI –Those orange barrels are popping up everywhere. An annual nationwide spring campaign aims to bring safety awareness to drivers on the road while driving through construction sites, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT).
The week of April 17-23 is National Work Zone Awareness Week. The campaign’s message is to drive with caution in work zones to protect workers.
According to MDOT, the majority of fatal car crashes in work zone areas are drivers and their passengers. In 2020, 857 people were killed in 774 fatal work zone crashes.
Go Orange Day is Wednesday, April 19, a day designated to help raise work zone safety awareness.
