KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — As Kalamazoo awaits an overdue report on air-borne contaminants on the Northside, the city has hired a Detroit firm to expand local testing.
And many will say it’s not just a health issue, but an environmental justice issue, because it’s happening between two targeted neighborhoods.
CEO of the company “Just Air” Darren Reilly says he got into the business because he began having asthma problems after moving into an Industrial area near Detroit. His company has begun setting up monitors here, and should have them calibrated and online by the end of May.
Reilly says Residents will be able to check on outside conditions using a phone app. He says while the city itself already has monitors, this one will test for more chemicals and can issue an alert.
He says the average person takes about 20,000 breaths each day, but the health effects can vary greatly depending on where they live.
The new firm already has air monitoring systems in the Motor City, Grand Rapids and Chicago.
