KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – You may want to think twice before speeding past a stopped Kalamazoo Public Schools bus with its lights flashing.
The Board of Education has approved a $127,000 contract to install cameras on the exteriors of their entire bus fleet to catch the license plate number of any vehicle that fails to stop.
Trustee Jennie Hill says it should make riding the bus safer for the children.
The 115 new cameras will be in addition to the interior cameras already installed fleetwide.
State law now permits school districts to report violators by presenting the video evidence to local law enforcement.
A ticket can cost between $100 and $500, plus court costs, with that doubled in a school zone.
KPS officials say it happens every day, but it has just been difficult to do anything about it until now.

A waste of taxpayer money, that $100k would be better spent in the school. We dont put cameras at stop lights to catch people speeding or running lights, either because its overreach.
