KALAMAZOO TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo Township Board of Trustees voted against a contract on Monday, April 3 to hire Northwood Battalion Fire Chief Jarius Baird as the township’s new fire chief.
This comes nearly seven months after the abrupt firing of former Fire Chief David Obreiter and Battalion Chief Matt Mulac last year on September 14.
But according to trustees, the Township Board’s handling of the hiring process was the concern, and not the candidate.
The firing of both Obreiter and Mulac stemmed from multiple complaints of racism, harassment, and a toxic work environment at the township’s Eastwood fire station.
The board voted 4-3 in opposition, declining to approve the proposed contract with Baird on Monday.
