KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will be finishing later this summer what was to be a two-year $87 million I-94 expansion project.
Delayed several months by several challenges including COVID-19, supply-chain issues, and design changes, contractors are anticipating the new Portage Road interchange and all lanes of I-94 between Sprinkle Road and Lovers Lane to be open to traffic in early August.
Contractors are currently rebuilding the final stretch of westbound I-94, from Portage Road to Lovers Lane, as well as the new westbound ramps at Portage Road.
The new Portage Road interchange will be a single-point urban interchange, or SPUI, which requires all of those facets of the project to be completed and connected at the same time, tying together I-94, Portage Road, the newly aligned Kilgore Road, and the interchange ramps.
Until work is completed, motorists can expect two lanes of traffic open in each direction on I-94, and one lane open in each direction on Portage Road. The westbound on-and-off-ramps at Portage Road will remain closed until the project is completed, as will the northbound Sprinkle Road ramp to westbound I-94.
