PENNFIELD TOWNSHIP, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – Two persons escaped serious injury on Friday morning when their vehicle was struck by a Amtrak train in Pennfield Township.
The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office says the crash happened at 9:42 a.m. as a 20-year-old male driver from Comstock Park and a 22-year-old female passenger from Grand Rapids were traveling south on Pine Lake Road near Pennfield Road.
They say it appears through a preliminary investigation and witnesses on scene that the railroad crossing indicators were down and the railroad red light markers were flashing and that the vehicle appeared to disregard the railroad crossing indicators.
The west bound train struck the vehicle on the driver side. The names of the man and woman in the vehicle were not released.
They sustained minor injuries and refused medical transportation to a nearby hospital. No one on the train was injured.
The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the CN Railroad Police, the Pennfield Fire Department, and Life Care ambulance.
