KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The State of Michigan is looking to certify more people to perform lead abatement work, and Kalamazoo is looking to do the same.
Recently, the City of Kalamazoo received federal grants totaling more than $4.5 million to help fund lead remediation in approximately 126 homes throughout the city. And city officials say more certified lead professionals will be needed for the job.
And they are encouraging those interested to attend an information session on Wednesday, April 12 which will detail the requirements on getting certified in lead abatement work.
The hour long information session, hosted by the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services will take place at Michigan Works located on 1601 South Burdick Street in Kalamazoo.
Officials say there is there is no cost to attend, but registration ahead of time is requested. Participants are asked to register for the session in advance.
The 40-hour training program will include general lead education, soft skills readiness, lead certification training, job placement assistance, lead firm business development guidance, and on-site training and coaching.
Lead Professionals often work with construction companies or provide specialized services to reduce the risk of lead exposure from things like lead-based paint in older homes.
According to Zippia.com, Certified Lead Professionals can expect to earn between $30,000 and $55,000 per year.
