KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo County Treasurer Thomas Whitener was put under oath and grilled again by Commissioner Jen Strebs, as there are still concerns about how he keeps the county’s books. During questioning, Strebs accused Whitener of submitting an electronic funds transfer to the bank before it had been properly approved.
In answering the question posed by Strebs, Whitener seemed to be unaware of the matter.
Board Chair John Taylor suggested it’s unclear who should be managing those payments.
Administrator Kevin Catlin says the bank got the order, but with a hold on the money until it had gotten board approval, and that the transaction was not completed in the proper order.
While no allegations of unlawful behavior have been made, a bad audit could hurt the County’s credit rating, and that could cost them more when they sell bonds or take out loans.
