KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A controversial proposal to change how Kalamazoo County Road Commissioners are appointed has been put on hold until County Staff can take a deep dive into the issue. The Road Commission has drawn criticism from bike riders who say the county has been slow to expand bike routes, and townships who are upset about county imposed speed limits. Both say the current road board is unresponsive, and that an elected board would be better. Commissioner Jen Strebs had planned to propose elections, rather than having the County Board appoint Road Board members. Apparently she didn’t have the votes so instead she proposed it be studied instead.
And several Commissioners have expressed opposition to the idea of electing the Road Board.
County Staff plan to look at what other counties are doing and report back in August.
