KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Kalamazoo School Board is being urged to pass a resolution that students and their parents get an education in gun safety, particularly in the proper storage of guns, use of gun locks, and putting weapons places where children can’t get to them.
Parent Beth Lupe, a “Be Smart” volunteer, addressed the trustees at their last meeting saying it would go a long way in preventing the kinds of tragedies that all too frequently appear in the news.
The State Board of Education approved a statement that goes much farther last fall after recommending universal background checks, waiting periods, and higher age requirements for gun purchases, and penalties for improper storage. State Superintendent Micheal Rice says polls show the public favors such measures.
Kalamazoo School officials say parents will soon be notified of plans to hold lockdown drills in the district, to make sure staff and students know what to do, should they face the threat of gun violence.
