KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A Kalamazoo city area bridge is slated to close for about six months.
The Paterson Street Bridge over the Kalamazoo River will close in both directions for structural maintenance and repairs starting in late February.
The city of Kalamazoo said in a news release this is being done to prolong the service life of the bridge which is located on the city’s Northside, between Pitcher Street and Riverview Drive.
Work on the bridge will include concrete deck removal and replacement, steel structure repairs, cleaning and coating of the existing steel structure, replacement of the approach pavement, surface sealant application, sidewalk repair and replacement, guardrail replacement, water main replacement along with some private utility work.
The nearly $4.7 million dollar project is getting 68% of it’s funding from the Federal Bridge program according to officials, which breaks down to just over $3.2 million in Federal Highway Administration funding administered by MDOT, with the city of Kalamazoo kicking nearly $1.5 million in City of Kalamazoo Major Streets funding.
Officials say the project was originally planned to start in late 2022 but was rescheduled to 2023.
The project is expected to be completed by September 1st of this year.
