KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety police recovered two firearms during a traffic stop early Monday morning, January 23.
According to the department, officers were called out around 1:22 a.m. to the 600 block of East Michigan Avenue near downtown to address some quality of life issues. While in the area, they stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation.
As the officers were talking with the occupants, an AK Pistol was seen laying in plain view on the backseat. As the investigation continued, a second gun, that had been reported stolen, was also located.
Authorities said that the second gun found, which would normally be a semi-automatic weapon, was converted to a fully automatic weapon.
Both the occupants of the vehicle were not Kalamazoo residents.
The driver was arrested and lodged for not having a driver’s license, while the passenger was arrested and lodged for multiple felony charges.
