KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A celebration of life service was held for the woman known for co-founding one of the first African American churches in Kalamazoo.
The celebration of life service took place on Saturday, January 21 at the Galilee Baptist Church for Stella Pearl Davis, also known as Mother D, who passed away on Wednesday, January 11.
Davis co-founded the Church of God Pentecostal in Kalamazoo along with her husband, the late Bishop Lafayette Will Davis Senior, whom she married on July 15, 1950.
They then moved to Chicago where six of their eight children were born, and lived there for 18 years before moving to Kalamazoo in 1968.
The couple met at a revival in Arkansas and were married for 50 years until Lafayette died on January 8th, 2001.
Besides co-founding with her husband the Church of God Pentecostal, Davis also worked at Borgess Hospital and retired after 13 years.
She also wrote two books, “Shut Mouth Grace” and “Divine Testimonies.”
Davis was almost 90 years old.
