KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The City of Kalamazoo and various iconic landmarks are set to turn red during February to raise awareness of the Go Red for Women campaign.
In an official proclamation of Friday, February 3 as “Wear Red Day,” Kalamazoo mayor David Anderson emphasized the importance of the community rallying to fight heart disease, which remains the number one killer of women worldwide.
“The City of Kalamazoo recognizes the importance of raising awareness of heart disease and stroke in our community,” said Anderson. “On February 3, we all go red – women and men, young and old. It’s an issue that impacts us all, and we are grateful for the lifesaving work of the American Heart Association.”
The announcement comes ahead of the 2023 Kalamazoo Go Red for Women Luncheon to be held Thursday, February 2, at 11 a.m. at the Radisson Plaza Hotel and Suites, of which the focus will be CPR education.
In conjunction with the signature luncheon event, the Radisson will light its lobby red. The Exchange Building, Fifth Third Bank and Kalamazoo City Hall will also turn their buildings red in recognition of the nationwide movement.
“The American Heart Association remains committed to raising awareness of cardiovascular disease – and funding lifesaving research for women’s heart health,” said Jana Siminski, Executive Director – West Michigan.
The American Heart Association, a global force for healthier lives for all, hosts the annual luncheon event, which is in its 16th year locally and has raised over $3.5 million in Kalamazoo since its inception.
“It’s not just about wearing red. It’s not just about sharing heart-health facts. It’s about all women standing together with Go Red for Women — because 1 in 3 women die from cardiovascular diseases and losing even one woman is too many,” Siminski said.
Go Red for Women is nationally sponsored by CVS Health and the Kalamazoo luncheon is locally sponsored by Ascension Borgess, Bell’s Brewery, Huntington Bank, and Kim Griffin and Dr. Bruce Rowe.
