KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Both the Kalamazoo City Commission and the Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners received updates last night on efforts to secure more affordable housing in the community, and the news was positive.
County Housing Director Mary Balkema says in the past year they have leveraged about $6-million into $114-million in actual and planned construction.
She says there is more good news, because a new senior housing project planned by Mt. Zion has just received funding from the Michigan State Housing Development Authority. It would not have been eligible for the state grant without that local commitment of funding.
That $1.7-million investment” will result in a $23-million high rise.
Housing Development Supervisor Sherilyn Parsons told city commissioners that their efforts to provide more affordable housing are also off to a good start, but it will take time.
She said if they can help create 215 new units each year for the next decade, they will have reached their goal.
The county’s application portal for the next round of projects has just opened and they will be accepting proposals for the next month.
