OTSEGO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The City of Otsego is working to bolster funding for it’s Public Safety department through a public safety millage increase proposal.
City Commissioners are set to meet next week on Monday, January 16 to pass a Resolution to apply ballot language to the May ballot for additional Public Safety revenue.
According to a press release from the city, the Resolution is in direct response to the need for 24/7 Otsego Fire Department staffing to provide medical first responder services.
City records indicated that the Otsego Fire Department handled more than 1,200 calls in 2022, which city officials say the on-call volunteer model simply cannot handle that size of a workload.
Officials went onto say that in order to provide 24/7 coverage with additional staff at the station, a millage increase will be necessary, which they stress has been part of a more than two year conversation on financial constraints.
The meeting to pass the Resolution will take place at Otsego City Hall at 7 p.m. The public is welcome to attend.
