BATTLE CREEK, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – A Battle Creek man was formally charged on Tuesday with murdering his father.
The Battle Creek Enquirer reports 34-year-old Cody Alan Hurt is being held without bond after he was arraigned on an open murder charge in Calhoun County District Court in connection with the death of his 61-year-old father Randall Hurt.
The victim’s body was found by Battle Creek firefighters during a residential fire last Tuesday night in the 200 block of Laurel Drive.
Randall Hurt was found lying on a couch in the front, living area of the residence.
During the Battle Creek Police investigation, Hurt was found to have multiple injuries that were not consistent with injuries normally sustained from a fire.
Cody Hurt was arrested several hours later. According to a news release last week from the City of Battle Creek, police detectives determined that the death was a result of domestic violence.
A Battle Creek firefighter was injured while fighting the fire and was treated at Bronson Battle Creek Hospital.
During the course of the investigation, a dog was also retrieved by the BCPD animal control unit. The pet was not harmed, and was removed from the scene for shelter and care.
The fire investigation shows the origin of the fire to be located in the back, laundry room area of the residence. Michigan State Police were also called to the scene to provide an accelerant dog to assist in the investigation.
