KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Some Kalamazoo City Commissioners are not happy that its taking so long to implement anti-racist initiatives in city government, and at their meeting Monday night it was suggested they have the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Director enshrined in the City Charter.
Some commissioners say it would make a statement that the city is serious about eliminating racism, something they feel they are not demonstrating now.
Commissioner Quiana Decker.
City Attorney Clyde Robinson says changing the charter is a very involved process that requires careful wording and approval by the State Attorney General, the Governor and city voters. He says doing it with an ordinance would be easier, quicker and more flexible.
Mayor Dave Anderson pointed out that the 138-year old City Charter still lists positions that are no longer filled.
Commissioners agreed to create a subcommittee to explore their options and come back with a recommendation some time next year.
