KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) -Tonight Kalamazoo City Commissioners will get their quarterly update on efforts to end the city’s “big stink”, a pervasive odor that comes from the city’s wastewater treatment plant, and the Graphics Packaging plant next door.
The target is to reduce the hydrogen-sulfide that escapes from the operations. That’s sewer gas caused by the breakdown of organic material, and Utilities Director Jim Baker says it takes time and money to eliminate.
The city has been under pressure from some groups and individuals to hire an expert to determine if the gases are a threat to public health.
City officials say federal and state health and environmental officials are already working together on just such a report that could be issued this coming spring.
