KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo City Commissioners held a work session on the City Manager’s budget proposal Monday night but suggested no major changes to the spending plan.
Some commissioners have expressed disappointment that more isn’t being allocated to relieve poverty and homelessness. Staff told them it’s taking time to organize the programs.
Mayor Dave Anderson pointed out that a $100 million multi-year commitment to replace lead service lines is focused on Kalamazoo’s older poorer neighborhoods. He calls that “equity work”, because that money comes from everyone who uses the water system.
Utility director Jim Baker says they have already done the East Side, and will spend $16 million replacing lead pipes on the northside in 2023, then move on to Edison Neighborhood.
