KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A Lansing man charged with a fatal shooting near Western Michigan University’s campus in November is heading to court for a preliminary exam.
According to court records, 29-year-old Damien Lang is facing six felony weapons charges along with an open murder charge in the fatal shooting of 21-year-old Bryce Salter in the parking lot of Campus Pointe Mall on West Michigan Avenue and Howard Street.
A witness told police that Salter and a group of men were fighting before the fatal shooting on November 11th. Salter was driven to the hospital where he died from his injuries.
Lang had told police he saw Salter standing next to his Dodge Durango in the nearby parking lot by the Y-Bar around 3:10 a.m. that morning.
Surveillance video showed that Lang walked over and argued with Salter, pointed a gun at his chest, knocking him to the ground. Salter then got up and began to fight Lang before he was fatally shot.
On scene, police found multiple shell casings along with the victim’s red hat in the parking lot outside the Y-Bar.
Lang is scheduled to appear in court on January 4th.
