PLAINWELL, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Plainwell Department of Public Safety is investigating after an elderly woman was found dead following an apartment fire Saturday, November 5.
Crews were called to North Main Street around 11:15 p.m. for reports of smoke coming from an apartment building.
Firefighters were able to locate and extinguish a small fire inside an apartment, but also found an elderly woman who was deceased according to Plainwell’s Public Safety Director, Kevin Callahan.
The Michigan State Police Fire Investigation unit was called into assist and found evidence the fire could be related to cigarette smoking and an oxygen generator, with the final determination to be made once the investigation is complete.
Authorities have not yet released the name of the victim, and an autopsy is pending.
