KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo Public Schools Board of Education Thursday night got an update on efforts to help students recover academically from the pandemic, and learned they will soon be getting some extra help.
Superintendent Dr. Rita Raichoudhuri says their three year master plan is on track, despite all the obstacles they have faced with the pandemic, and manpower has been hard to find.
A Washington Post article this week noted that only about 15% of the funding allocated nationally to help schools recover has been spent…
Dr. Raichoudhuri admits they haven’t been able to hire everyone they wanted because of worker shortages, but says they have moved aggressively to set up a recovery program.
She says they have just learned new funding targeted just for this purpose will be allocated by the state, but doesn’t know how much they might be getting yet.
She says so far their efforts seem to be working, because test scores from the end of last year showed improvement, particularly among low income and black and brown students.
