KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Crews with the city of Kalamazoo’s Department of Public Services are making headway on the clean-up process from the Thursday morning October 20 release of industrial liquids by Graphic Packaging International to the storm sewer and the Kalamazoo River.
Officials were made aware of the release into the storm sewer located at 1500 North Pitcher Street Thursday around 6:33 a.m. The release is estimated at 1,500 to 2,000 gallons.
Work is ongoing now with the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy surface water compliance officer for the Kalamazoo area scheduled to visit the site on Friday, October 21.
The city is currently testing the Kalamazoo River both upstream and downstream and within the storm sewer where the discharge occurred with results expected to take up to two weeks to obtain.
The no contact advisory issued for the Kalamazoo River between Paterson Street Bridge and D Avenue Bridge is remaining in effect until further notice by the Kalamazoo County Health and Community Services Department.
