KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The City of Kalamazoo sits on top of a groundwater supply which produces the millions of gallons the region depends on every day. Tonight City Commissioners are expected to beef up protection of that precious resource after taking public comment. .
On the agenda is a proposal to update their Wellhead Protection Plan, and for the first time add it to the City’s Code of Ordinances. The update regulates land and chemical uses that might threaten the water supply.
Environmental Programs Manager Jean Tolanda says right now the Protection Plan is in the city’s zoning code, but it’s not really a zoning matter.
Most of the city is subject to the state mandated standards spelled out in the plan.
Property owners in the protected zone received a postcard from the city notifying them of tonight’s public hearing. The meeting starts at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall.
