KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners has approved their 2023 budget. Again this year, the vote wasn’t unanimous, but it went relatively quickly last night.
Commissioners approved a series of motions, okaying the spending plan and the taxation needed to fund the $120-million budget.
It wasn’t entirely free of controversy. One citizen objected to a budget provision granting the next commission a hefty 22% pay raise. The commission is being trimmed from 11 to nine members.
The final vote on the budget was 8-2.
How much the county will have to spend partly depends on voters, who will be asked in November to waive the Headlee Amendment, which would generate an additional $2.1-million annually if it passes.
