BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Battle Creek Police have arresting a man who allegedly kidnapped and shot at a girlfriend on Saturday morning, September 10.
Authorities say that 26-year-old Jatai Nicholas-Rafano Cummings was found by police on Tuesday, September 13, hiding in the back of a cargo van in the area of Greenwood Avenue and Oneita Street during a traffic stop.
The arrest was a joint effort between Battle Creek Police and the Michigan Department of Corrections Absconder Unit.
Cummings is said to have forced the girlfriend into his car at around 6 a.m. on Saturday. He then left her at another house, where she walked into a third house in the area of Sherman Road and Chestnut Street. At that time, the woman said that Cummings was sitting in his car. He then got out, began yelling at her, and fired a shot at her. The shot missed and no one was injured.
At that time, police had found the suspect’s car, but he wasn’t in it.
Cummings is being lodged in the Calhoun County jail, pending arraignment on kidnapping, assault with intent to murder, and carjacking charges.
