DOWNERS GROVE, IL (WKZO AM/FM) – A memorial service will be held this Sunday for a Western Michigan University student was struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver early Saturday morning.
21-year-old Kaylee Gansberg from Lisle, Illinois died around 12 noon Saturday.
Authorities say the accident happened around 2:00 a.m. in the 2700 block of West Michigan Avenue, where officers discovered what appeared to be a pedestrian in the roadway that had been struck by an automobile.
The vehicle involved and the operator fled the scene of the accident. Officers immediately began providing medical attention to the injured pedestrian and located the involved motorist a short time later at a residence in the city
KDPS says the driver, a 22-year-old Kalamazoo resident, was determined to be operating while under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident and was arrested on related charges and lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail. The name of the driver hasn’t been released yet.
A GoFundMe campaign with a goal of $5,000 has now raised over $38,000 for Gansberg’s family.
A memorial visitation will be held Sunday, September 4 from 3:00-8:00 p.m.. The memorial service will be at 6:00 p.m. at Adams-Winterfield & Sullivan Funeral Home, 4343 Main Street, Downers Grove, IL.
