KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Officials at Urban Alliance are inviting the public to attend the event, being held on Wednesday, August 24, from 4 to 6 p.m. at 1009 East Stockbridge Avenue in Kalamazoo.
Urban Alliance Executive Director Chris Pompey said in a release that, “we view this open house as a way to invite the community to visit our newly renovated space, learn about our efforts to improve the community and its residents, and celebrate our shared progress and potential.”
Since its founding in 1999, Urban Alliance has worked to provide support and stability needed to overcome societal hurdles. Like many other aspects of life, the pandemic has impacted the organization’s services and direction in recent years.
While still providing its core services, Urban Alliance now places greater emphasis on its efforts to provide boots-on-the-ground community outreach by providing street outreach twice a week, responding to traumatic events, and building relationships with those experiencing homelessness, in addition to expanding its youth offerings.
Urban Alliance’s partnerships include weekly Chess Club meetings with Kalamazoo Premier Chess Club, weekly visits from KGM mobile shower, monthly diaper distribution through St. Luke’s Diaper Bank, and a series of Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.
Several partner organizations also operate full- or part-time from Urban Alliance, including, but not limited to, Building Blocks, GLOW, Synergy Center, Kalamazoo Empowerment, GVI, Edison Chapel, and Uthrive LLC. Several organizations offer individual and group counseling by appointment in the building.
