KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo City Mayor David Anderson says he’s confident in the team overseeing the investigation of Kalamazoo Police Chief Vernon Coakley.
According to a statement from the office of City Manager James Ritsema, Coakley was put on leave Tuesday, August 16, while under investigation for harassment accusations made by city employees.
Mayor Anderson went onto say that the city manager will not make a decision on Coakley’s future with the city until the investigation concludes, nor did they know how long the investigation will take.
During this time, KDPS will be under the leadership of Acting Public Safety Chief David Boysen.
In a statement, Anderson said, “We know that the good work of KDPS will continue for the community without interruption.”
Coakley was named the department’s first black chief in September of 2020, replacing Chief Karianne Thomas who was fired. City officials had initially said that she had resigned.
Coakely has worked at KDPS for nearly 24 years.
