PAW PAW, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Michigan State Police have released a man arrested in connection to a deadly crash in Van Buren County after discovering he was not the at-fault driver.
After additional investigating, MSP now says that Renato Florez was not the driver of the van that hit a motorcycle, killing 27-year-old Darek Jamal Bullock-Mills.
All charges against Florez were dropped on Monday, August 15.
The crash happened around 9:45 p.m. last Friday at the intersection of 90th Avenue and 67th Street in Keeler Township when a Ford panel van was heading westbound on 90th Avenue and crossed the center line, crashing head-on with the eastbound motorcycle, driven by Bullock-Mills.
At the time of the crash, troopers were told Florez was the driver of the van and arrested him on suspicion of operating while intoxicated.
On Sunday, August 14, MSP said troopers followed up on new evidence discovered on Saturday, August 13, which led them additional witnesses inside the van, but had left the scene before officers arrived.
According to authorities, these witnesses said that a different person was the driver, who is still at large.
