KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Voters across eight Southwest Michigan Counties turned out to make their voices heard on a wide variety of millage requests, renewals, and service proposals that were on the ballot. Unofficial results as of 3 a.m. on Wednesday, August 3, indicate a strong majority of actions won the approval of voters.
Here’s a look at some of the significant items by county.
CALHOUN COUNTY: Voters approved the Calhoun County 911 Millage Proposal which will authorize a new tax of .98 mills to be levied by Calhoun County to fund the Consolidated Dispatch Authority from 2023 through 2032, to be used exclusively for the funding of 9-1-1 emergency telephone call answering and dispatch services within Calhoun County, including facilities, equipment and maintenance, and operating costs.
There was overwhelming approval for the Calhoun County Veterans Services Operating Millage Renewal Proposal which asked voters to renew a millage to continue to support veteran services. Calhoun County residents will continue to pay .10 mils over the next 10 years to enhance state and local benefits for veterans.
The Calhoun County Medical Care Facility Operating Millage Renewal Proposal also won voter approval.
Voters a little more narrowly approved the City of Albion’s New Street Millage which will initiate a new levy of six mills over the next three years beginning with the 2023 tax year, which is estimated to raise nearly 567,000 in the first year for the rehabilitating and reconstructing Albion’s city streets.
CASS COUNTY: Voters said yes to the Cass County 911 Central Dispatch Proposal, Cass District Library Millage Proposal, Volinia Township Road Millage Renewal, Cassopolis Schools Sinking Fund Millage Proposal, and Decatur Schools Operating Millage Proposal. But it was a no for the Edwardsburg Schools Bonding Proposal.
KALAMAZOO COUNTY: Voters said yes to the Comstock Township Proposal for their Senior Services Millage: An increase of up to 1 mill which will provide money for support services to older adults at the Comstock Community Center.
ST. JOSEPH COUNTY: Voters approved the County Proposal for St. Joseph County, along with the White Pigion Schools Sinking Fund Millage Renewal Proposal which will generate funds for the construction or repair of school buildings along with developing and improving sites. Voters here also saying yes to the Constantine Village Proposals Ambulance, Fire, and Police.
VAN BUREN COUNTY: It was a yes for both the County Ambulance and County Public Safety Renewals, along with Senior Services Proposals for for the cities of Bangor, Gobles, Hartford, and South Haven to include other townships winning voter approval for Senior Services Proposals. Also getting the nod, the Mattawan School Operating Millage.
