IONIA COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has confirmed the first known case of monkeypox in Ionia County on Saturday, July 30.
The statewide total is now up to 37, which is an increase from 27 on Thursday, July 28.
The state health department is urging anyone who may have been exposed to monkeypox to contact their local health department about vaccination. It recommends the vaccine to be given to within four days from the exposure date.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention describes monkeypox as part of the same family of viruses as smallpox, but not chickenpox.
