KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — It appears that Kalamazoo Public School students have bounced back academically following the pandemic. And while school officials say there is still room for improvement, they are making gains.
Superintendent Rita Raichoudhuri says scores went up in math and reading and that more students got back on track to graduate during the school year that ended just weeks ago, with some subgroups jumping double digits.
School officials are usually happy to see improvements of just a few percent in any given year. Trustee Megan Maddock is also a teacher.
Dr. Raichoudhuri says some of the biggest gains were among students from low income families, who took the biggest hit during the Pandemic.
She says while those students made the biggest strides this year, they continue to lag behind.
The numbers also showed that graduation rates set a new record high this spring, after taking a dip in the first year of the pandemic. Officials say this is just a preliminary report, and that a more comprehensive breakdown of student progress is expected this fall after they’ve had a chance to crunch the numbers.
