COLON, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A home near Colon in St. Joseph County was destroyed early Monday morning after a vehicle crashed into it and caught fire.
The Colon Fire Department was dispatched at 12:38 a.m. to a report of a single vehicle crash which took place in the area of Burr Oak and East Palmer Lake Roads.
The call came into dispatch through On-star. It was initially reported that an occupant was trapped and the vehicle was possibly on fire.
A bystander updated 911 that the vehicle had crashed into a home and detached garage and caught fire, spreading fire quickly into the residence.
First arriving Colon Fire Department members alerted central dispatch that the home was well involved and the driver had escaped from the vehicle.
Due to the structural damage from the impact and a partial roof collapse, all firefighting operations were defensive.
The home was unoccupied at the time and was declared a total loss.
Fire departments from Bronson, Burr Oak and Tri-Township were called in for assistance.
Also assisting were Colon Police, Bower’s Service and the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department.
