KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Hundreds of supporters of abortion rights gathered at Bronson Park in downtown Kalamazoo Friday afternoon, June 24, to protest the Supreme Court overturning the landmark 1973 Roe verses Wade ruling that recognized a woman’s constitutional right to an abortion and legalized it nationwide.
The court ruled 6-3 in favor by it’s conservative majority.
In response, Kalamazoo area residents convened on Bronson Park well before the scheduled 5 p.m. start of the impromptu Friday rally.
Petitioners made their way through the crowd, gathering signatures for a petition to get abortion rights on the November 2022 ballot. That signature campaign has until July 11 to collect about 425,000 valid signatures, which would then allow voters to decide abortion rights in Michigan.
With it no longer a constitutional right in the United States, abortion is illegal in Michigan under a 1931 law. However, the law cannot be enforced based on a May ruling by the Michigan Court of Claims. This means for now, abortion care will continue in Michigan, according to Planned Parenthood.
The afternoon’s rally featured numerous guest speakers to include State Senator Sean McCann, State Representative Julie Rogers, and State Representative Christine Morse.
