ALBION, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – One man is injured after being shot by an officer with the Albion Department of Public Safety.
The man’s family told police he was acting irrationally and threatening to kill a family member just after 5:15 p.m. Wednesday.
Family members said the man was having mental health issues, and drinking while on his medication.
Around 6:30 p.m. three Albion Department of Public Safety officers, two who are part of the Crisis Intervention Team, were dispatched to a home on North Eaton Street near West Pine Street. The home belongs to the relative the man had allegedly threatened to kill earlier that night.
The man’s relative ran out of the back door as the man broke in through the front.
Officers confronted the man, who turned around and reportedly raised a gun at them.
One officer shot the man after he ignored several commands to drop the gun.
After the shooting, officers tried to administer first aid and CPR until an ambulance.
The man’s gun was recovered at the scene.
According to the Albion Department of Public Safety, the officer who shot the man has been placed on administrative leave while Michigan State Police investigate.
