KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo City Commission Tuesday voted to spend a half million dollars from their federal COVID-19 relief funding to greatly expand the city’s Police Athletic League, as well a funding a summer soccer program, two midnight basketball leagues and three Rocket Football Leagues.
Cheif Vern Coakley says they are also organizing a three-on-three basketball tourney for mid July.
It greatly expands a much smaller program he has been running for years.
Commissioner Chris Preadel says that’s on top of funding already approved for a youth jobs program and another that will provide a wide variety of other activities this summer.
The football program is the largest, with about 630 youngsters involved. City officials says all of the programs come with an educational element as well.
