GRAND HAVEN, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The swimming area at the Grand Haven State Park has reopened today, with current flag conditions at yellow, but water conditions and several near-drownings closed the swimming area Tuesday.
Park officials say the swimming area was closed “after multiple water emergencies.,”
WOOD-TV 8 reports there were three near-drownings during red flag conditions, the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety said in a release. It said around 6:50 p.m. a 28-year-old woman from Holland was struggling to get to shore. Her husband, a 24-year-old, tried to help and also started to struggle.
They eventually made it to shore before officers arrived.
While that was happening, a 35-year-old man from Comstock Park was trying to save his kids, a 12-year-old girl and an 11-year-old boy. All three were eventually saved by an off-duty Grand Haven police officer and other bystanders, police say.
While officers were still on scene, a 28-year-old woman from Okemos started struggling in the lake. Officers helped her husband bring her back to the shore.
Park officials Wednesday said use caution if entering the water and be aware of changing water conditions.
